SBVC Men’s Basketball guard Gerry Blakes (Inglewood Morningside) has given a verbal commitment to Arizona State University.
Guard Gerry Blakes (Inglewood Morningside) was named first team All-Foothill Conference and first team All-California. This year, Blakes led the Conference in points per game with 16.5, finishing 20th in SoCal in points per game. He had 429 total points, shot 84% from the free throw line, and grabbed 186 total boards. This is an exciting moment for fifth-year coach Quincy Brewer, who wore number 34 as a player at Arizona State from 1993-1997.
Under the tutelage of coach Brewer, SBVC Men's Basketball ended the regular season winning 12 of 15 games, on their way to another Playoff berth. The run through the playoffs included an opening round upset victory at #7 Riverside City, on their way to a second straight SoCal Finals appearance.
Coach Brewer had two players named first team All-Foothill Conference, the team finished the year with a 22-9 overall record and a 11-3 conference record. They were rewarded with a tenth seed in the Southern California Regional Playoffs.
SBVC Men’s Basketball entered the second round of the Southern California Regional’s after getting a first round bye. As the number ten seed, they traveled to the number seven seed Riverside City Tigers. RCC looked to christen their new gymnasium with a playoff victory over their former regional rivals SBVC, but the visiting team would have none of that. SBVC sent a resounding message by thumping the Tigers, 66-56 and moving on.
Securing a ten seed for SBVC, no one expected to see SBVC play at home in the playoffs, but the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles pulled off a huge upset and the third round match-up featured familiar Foothill foes. SBVC hosted the number fifteen seeded Eagles, the game was a bruising contest between two teams who knew a great deal about one another, but SBVC proved victorious and moved on to play at the number three seeded Walnut Mt. San Antonio Mounties for a shot at getting back to the state semifinals for the first time in three years.
Unfortunately, the season ended at the hands of the State Champion Mounties, 60-53. The game was plagued with bad shot selection as SBVC shot 33% from the field and the Mt. SAC only hit 40% of their shots. The team finished the season with a 22-9 overall record.
Arizona State University is located in Tempe, Arizona. The ASU Sun Devils play at Wells Fargo Arena, and the team is coached by seven-year veteran coach, Herb Sendek. In the 2012-2013 season, the Sun Devils went 9-9 in conference play, with an overall record of 22-13. The Sun Devils lost to Baylor in the second round of the post-season NIT. ASU is in the Pac-12 Conference of the NCAA Division One.
