The Sports Information Department is on the look out for reliable and trustworthy interns to work with through the fall (August 26 to November 26), winter (November 17 to March 4), and/or spring (January 25 to May 1). This is an unpaid internship. The ideal candidate selection should be a student at SBVC and able to intern 5 to 10 hours a week during the fall and/or winter and/or spring. Their individual internship schedule will be adjusted as to accommodate any student’s practice and/or academic schedule. The candidate should have a major in anyone of the following areas: marketing, business, journalism, sports marketing, (online, TV, or print) media, photography, web development, and other related fields.
The Sports Information Department will need an intern to assist by spotting at all home football, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, baseball, and softball games.
Candidates who have their own laptop, a single-lens reflex (SLR) camera, and that are not employed off campus are preferred, but not required.
The reason the SBVC Sports Information Department is making this request is for two reasons: one, because we want to give our students something we never had before we entered the workforce, legitimate workplace experience in an office environment. And two, with the goals we have set for the sports information office (eg. every sport having a media guide), we need some help to input all the data required to assemble a quality product.
Pluses for this internship are that the candidate will be given guidance in their area of expertise. Example: If you have a passion for journalism, we will give you what every journalist gets in their e-mail in box after a college game, the stats. We will help our interns extract a story from those stats, therefore making them better at critical thinking skills and writing. By the end of their internship, the candidate who has a passion for journalism will learn to write an effective and cogent media related article on an athletic competition in 45 minutes or less. This experience will give you a portfolio of work and a level of experience that will make you a top candidate for any job and hand you a leg up on being a more productive member of society.
The Sports Information Department has an SLR camera and an older, but operational laptop, so we will be working alongside of our interns; we are not looking for someone to work for us, but someone to work with us.
We look forward to receiving the names, e-mail addresses, and contact phone numbers of ideal candidates throughout the year.
