SBVC Men’s Track & Field sophomore Julian Lopez (Eastvale Eleanor Roosevelt) who finished third in the 3000 meter (2.5 miles) steeplechase at the Track & Field State Finals, was named an All-American.

(Photo by Brian Sylva/Sports Information Director SBVC)The Track & Field State Finals were held at Cerritos College on May 18th and 19th, where Lopez finished with a time of 9:24.90 and was the only SBVC runner to place; the other two distance runners did not earn points.

Lopez won the Foothill/Pacific Coast Conference title in the steeplechase at the Conference Finals at San Diego Mesa on April 21 and finished second at the SoCal Finals at San Diego Mesa on May 12. At the 2011 Track & Field State Finals, distance runner Travis Nemchick (Menifee Paloma Valley) won the state championship in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:08.92.

The SBVC Men’s Track & Field team finished 20th at the SoCal Finals with a total of 9 points, the SoCal Champion, Riverside City, won with just over 203 points. Eight of SBVC’s nine total points at the SoCal Finals were as a result of Julian Lopez’s second place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase. SBVC finished third at the Conference Finals with 126.5 points. The participation of distance runners accounted for 60 of the 126.5 points, equaling 47%.
