Focus:

        Collaboration is central to professional development. To this end, the San Bernardino English Department invites you to join us in a unique opportunity to meet with area colleagues for a day devoted to the advancement of effective teaching of adult ESL students.

       The focus of the Colloquium is on effective teaching strategies and includes topics such as:
      - Addressing Common Language Issues     
      - Social Interaction Techniques
      - Ideas that Enhance General College Success
      - Strategies for Vocational Classes
      - Assessment Strategies

      - Resources: websites, texts, etc.
      - Homework Assignments

Format:

        We will offer two distinct presentation formats:
       (1) 50 minute Concurrent Sessions
                These sessions involve any combination of lecture, demonstration, discussion focused on fieldwork-based and research-based effective teaching strategies. We will have two concurrent sessions before lunch.


       (2) 10-minute GIFTs (Great Ideas for Teaching)
               GIFT sessions  are brief, but thorough descriptions of practical/creative ideas  pertaining to the focus of our collolquium. Presenters provide handouts and make use of audio/visual aids.

Dr. Carlos E. Cortes
Keynote Speaker

       Dr. Carlos E. Cortes is a highly sought after speaker and award winning Professor Emeritus of History from the University of California, Riverside.
       A consultant to many government agencies, school systems, universities, mass media, private businesses and other organizations, Dr. Cortes has written film and television documentaries, has appeared as guest host on the PBS national television series, "Why in the World?, is the featured presenter on the Video Journal of Education's 1994 training video "Diversity in the Classroom" and currently serves as Cultural Consultant for Nickelodeon's preschool series, "Dora the Explorer."
       His two most recent books are: The Children are Watching: How the Media Teach about Diversity, and The Making -and Remaking-of a Multiculturalist. He is the editor of three book series and author of numerous other professional books and articles, among which is "Beyond Language: Social and Cultural Factors in Schooling Language Minority Students."
