EMERGENCY DRIVING
The driver training block of instruction is conducted at the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department Emergency Vehicle Operations Training Center (EVOC) in Devore, CA.
The facility is 11 years old and is situated near the Basic Academy on 80 acres. The facility features include a high-speed track, street/city grid, emergency lane change, skid pan and driver training simulators. Thirteen (13) local academies are trained at the facility, including SBVC academy trainees. The facility is large enough to accommodate multiple phases of training simultaneously, which minimizes downtime. The instructors are permanent staff assigned to the driving center and they function as vehicle operation instructors only.
The trainees are provided with a police vehicle, equipped with proper safety equipment (i.e. roll bars, instructor brake pedal, shoulder restraints etc.), along with each trainee being issued a safety helmet for high-speed operations. Driver training simulators are utilized to provide the trainees with the ability to be exposed to real-life scenarios, testing their decision making and judgment abilities, while in a controlled, risk-free environment. The simulators are also designed to place the trainees in an "accident avoidance" mindset.
