Football: All-Conference team selected
November 18, 2009
Under first-year coach Kevin Emerson, SBVC finished
with a record 5-5 overall and 5-2 in conference.
SBVC Football looks
to continue on the upswing that was left over from the end of the
season, where SBVC won four straight conference games and knocked
off an undefeated team. SBVC Football was rewarded for their hard
work by finishing the season with the best record since 2006 and the
four game winning streak was the best since 1997. In week four
versus Victor Valley and week ten versus L.A. Harbor, SBVC swept all
three Mountain Conference Player of the Week categories.
SBVC Football was
awarded 15 times with Players of the Week honors by the American
Division-Mountain Conference in all categories, from Offense to
Defense to Special Teams and All-Purpose players. In addition, there
were 8 players named honorable mention this season for their
contributions on the field.
Sophomore standout
receiver, Marcus Williams (San Bernardino San Gorgonio), was named
first team all-Mountain Conference offense. Williams had 59 catches
for 874 yards and 10 touchdowns, he finished 3rd in conference in
yards per game with 87.4 and receptions per game with 5.9. In week
four, versus Victor Valley, he was named Conference Offensive Player
of the Week and an honorable mention twice.
A unanimous first
team all-Mountain Conference selection was bestowed upon freshman
offensive lineman Daniel Bernard (Colton H.S.), as a unanimous
selection, Bernard will automatically be eligible for All-State
honors.
Sophomore linebacker
Jim O’Brien (Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World) was also a unanimous
first team all-Mountain Conference selection for his role in leading
the state in tackles at the linebacker position. O’Brien had 26 solo
tackles, assisted on 82 tackles, equaling 108 total tackles. O’Brien
also had 5.5 tackles for loss totaling 11 yards, one interception, 3
broken up passes, recovered two fumbles, had one forced fumble, and
one blocked kick. In week four, versus Victor Valley, he was named
Conference Defensive Player of the Week and an honorable mention
twice.
Freshman tight end
Curtis Cummings III (Perris H.S.), freshman running back Kristin
James (San Bernardino H.S.), and freshman offensive lineman Ray
Rodriguez (Colton H.S.) were selected second team all-Mountain
Conference.
James led the
Conference in yards per game with 120.8, setting record numbers on
the ground with 966 rushing yards on 192 carries, and caught 48
yards out of the backfield. In week eight, versus Southwestern and
week ten versus L.A. Harbor, James was named Conference Offensive
Player of the Week and an honorable mention once.
Sophomore safety
Dexter Fowler (Victorville Silverado), sophomore defensive linemen
Rutger Metzger (Hesperia H.S.), and freshman Linebacker Don’ziel
Collins (Moreno Valley H.S.) were selected second team all-Mountain
Conference.
Fowler had 19 solo
tackles, assisted on 18 tackles, equaling 37 total tackles and had 8
broken up passes. Fowler also had 663 all-purpose yards including
540 kickoff return yards and 107 interception return yards. In
addition, Fowler had two touchdowns, one on a kickoff return of 88
yards and the other an interception return for a touchdown of 94
yards. As a result of that interception return for a touchdown, in
week six versus Compton, Fowler was named Conference Defensive
Player of the Week.
Metzger had 9 solo
tackles, assisted on 31 tackles, equaling 40 total tackles. Metzger
also had 6 tackles for loss totaling 43 yards, 4.5 sacks equaling 37
yards lost, one broken up pass, and one forced fumble. For his
superior game play in week three, versus Saddleback, he was named
Conference Defensive Player of the Week.
Collins had 23 solo tackles, assisted on
46 tackles, equaling 69 total tackles.
Collins also had 8 tackles for loss
totaling 37 yards, 3.5 sacks equaling 20
yards lost. For his superior game play
in week ten, versus L.A. Harbor, he was
named Conference Defensive Player of the
Week.

SBVC knocks Harbor from the ranks of the
unbeaten
November 14, 2009
SBVC honored its sophomores, who were
playing in their last game with SBVC,
showing no fear and no regard for
record, went out on the field and
summarily slugged the L.A. Harbor
Seahawks, 29-21.
L.A. Harbor (9-1,
6-1) entered the game undefeated and
ranked ninth in Southern California,
while SBVC was ranked as high as 20th in
the same poll after a 4 game winning
streak earlier this season.
SBVC opened the
game in a way they have not the whole
season, they scored on their first
offensive possession. Going 57 yards in
5 plays,
freshman
quarterback Roman Neville (Box Elder,
UT) connected with sophomore wide
receiver Marcus Williams (San Bernardino
San Gorgonio) for a 10 yard touchdown.
Nearly 20 minutes
later, the Seahawks vaunted offense
scored on an 11 play, 75 yard drive that
chewed up 4:55, and ended on a 1 yard
touchdown run by freshman running back
Jon White (South Torrance).
The SBVC defense
really stepped their game up in order to
meet the state's best offense. Harbor
went 5 for 11 on third down conversions,
3 of 6 in the red zone, and were 0 for 2
on field goals. SBVC was 4 of 4 from the
red zone and connected on half of their
field goal opportunities.
With 1:26 left in
the first half,
freshman running back Kristin James (San
Bernardino H.S.) finished up a 10 play
60 yard drive with a 4 yard touchdown
run. Giving SBVC a 14-7 lead going into
halftime. James finished the game with
223 yards on 41 carries, equaling 5.4
yards per carry, he finished the season
with 1066 total yards, making James'
2009 season the eighth best rushing
total in SBVC history.
The Seahawks tied
the game early in the second half, with
White catching a 17 yard touchdown pass
from freshman quarterback Dominique
Blackman (Carson H.S.), making the
score, 14-14. SBVC responded 2 minutes
later on a James 57 yard touchdown run,
after a failed extra point attempt, the
score was 20-14, SBVC.
Harbor then marched
down the field on their next possession
going 58 yards in 9 plays and wrapping
up on a 1 yard quarterback sneak by
Blackman, after a converted extra point,
the Seahawks took their first lead of
the game, 21-20.
The events that
transpired next could not be described,
but could only be experienced. The
stifling SBVC defense sacked the Harbor
quarterback for a 17 yard loss, Blackman
fumbles the ball at the Seahawks 8 yard
line, where it was recovered by SBVC
freshman defense back Brian Doss (San
Bernardino H.S.), giving SBVC first and
goal. After a three and out series,
where Neville was sacked for a loss of
seven yards, freshman kicker Jaime
Garcia (San Bernardino H.S.) attempts a
29 yard field goal, the kick is up and
good, but Harbor gets called for a
roughing the kicker penalty, giving SBVC
a new set of downs. Moments later
Neville connects with his favorite
target Williams on a acrobatic 6 yard
touchdown reception. After a failed two
point conversion attempt, SBVC 26,
Harbor 21. SBVC's Williams had 59
receptions, putting him second all time
in the SBVC record books, for 874 yards
and 10 touchdowns on the season.
Many of the
fans in the stadium and those on the
field could feel the building crescendo,
could SBVC hand one of the best teams in
California their first loss? Harbor
tried mightily to get back in the game,
but the SBVC defense executed
surgically, lead by sophomore linebacker
Jim O'Brien (Rim of the World) and
freshman defensive back Donziel Collins (Moreno Valley H.S.),
each finished with 14 and 13 total
tackles respectively. SBVC sophomore
defensive back Dexter Fowler
(Victorville Silverado) had 4 huge
broken up passes, as Harbor moved their
passing attack towards him at every
opportunity.
Collins had 6 solo tackles, assisted on
7 tackles, equaling 13 total tackles.
Collins also had 3.5 tackles for loss
totaling 17 yards and 2.5 sacks totaling
13 yards lost.
In the fourth,
SBVC put a sizable chore at the feet of
freshman kicker Jaime Garcia,
connect on the longest field goal of the
season and go up 8 points on Harbor,
with 6:59 left, or miss and give Harbor
a chance to win on one touchdown.
Garcia, who also plays for the SBVC
men's soccer team, approached the
challenge gracefully and connected on
his longest field goal of the year, 34
yards. SBVC went 54 yards in 9 plays,
chewing up 5:27 off the clock.
Harbor tried,
but failed to drive the field, they
punted away the ball with 4:10 left in
the game, hoping their defense would be
able to stop SBVC in time for the
Seahawks to try another shot at the end
zone. The Seahawks luck finally ran out,
when SBVC punted, after a three and out
series, Harbor was again called for
roughing the kicker, giving SBVC an
additional 15 yards and an automatic
first down. The penalty, coupled with
the Harbor defense having absolutely no
answer for Kristin James, gave SBVC the
victory, pulling off the improbable and
beating the unbeatable team.
Football:
Collision of Division Heavyweights
haunts SBVC
November 7, 2009
SBVC went into the locker room at half
time down, 7-24. Yet the magic had run
out of the genie this time and SBVC fell
to Golden West, 21-41.
As the game
began both teams could not score on one
another, much like the strategic plans
set up on the practice field, a big play
would be needed to open the stalemate.
With no time left in the first quarter
SBVC freshman quarterback Roman Neville
(Box Elder, UT) had a pass intercepted
by sophomore linebacker Ricky Pemesa
(Orange Lutheran) and taken 60 yards for
the first score of the game. The
interception was the first of four on
the night for Neville.
SBVC answered
moments later, sophomore linebacker Jim
O'Brien (Rim of the World) blocked a
punt which was picked up by freshman
defensive back Donziel Collins (Moreno
Valley H.S.) and returned 12 yards for a
score. Unfortunately, it would be the
last time SBVC would score in the first
half.
SBVC did open
up the scoring in the second half on a
13 play, 78 yard drive that ate up 6:43
and ended on an 8 yard touchdown run by
freshman running back Kristin James (San
Bernardino H.S.). With 4:23 left in the
game, freshman slash man Robert Fuller
(San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) received
a toss from the quarterback, rolled to
the left, then heaved a pass down field
to sophomore wide receiver Marcus
Williams (San Bernardino San Gorgonio)
who leapt into the air and came down
with the touchdown.
SBVC had only
4 penalties totaling 32 yards, but
Golden West only had 2 penalties
totaling 12 yards. Golden West had 301
yards passing and 3 touchdowns and two
receivers with over 100 yards in
receptions. SBVC running back James had
135 yards rushing and a touchdown.
Football:
SBVC Fourth Straight Win! First Time Since 1997!
October
31, 2009
SBVC went into the locker room at half
time down, 13-28. Then came roaring back
to win the game 42-38, to move to 4-1 in
Mountain Conference play. The last time
SBVC won 4 straight games was in 1997.
Southwestern came out gunning, going for
the no huddle offense, which eventually
caught up to them as the Jaguars looked
exhausted going into the fourth
quarter. SBVC capitalized and
Southwestern could not muster enough of
an offensive drive to take the lead
again.
Even as the knee injuries started piling
up for SBVC, they held their ground not
giving up the short plays, but
relinquishing the long touchdowns.
The offensive line impressed the crowd
and the coaching staff, opening up holes
for the running back core and protecting
passers.
The SBVC defense played strong all four
quarters, the special teams were
virtually mistake free, and penalties
were at a minimum.
Football:
SBVC wins again, comes from behind to beat Mt. San Jacinto
October
24, 2009
SBVC went into
the locker room at half time down, 0-14.
Then came roaring back to win the game
28-17, to move to 3-1 in Mountain
Conference play.
This game was dominated by defense as
the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles had sophomore
defensive back Aubrey Bell (Temecula
Chaparral) intercept 3 SBVC passes,
while SBVC sophomore defensive lineman
Kemaine Thurston (San Bernardino Arroyo
Valley) had two fumble recoveries,
sophomore defensive back James Marshall
(Moreno Valley) had an interception of
53 yards, and freshman defensive back
Darrell Callis (Moreno Valley) had an
interception of 61 yards.
Once again glaring mistakes on special
teams and an unacceptable amount of
penalties are what kept SBVC from making
much headway until the second half of
the game. SBVC had 13 penalties for 132
yards, while the Eagles had 12 penalties
for 109 yards.
SBVC had their punt attempt blocked, and
returned 24 yards into the end zone by
freshman running back Brendan Young
(Kauai, HI), 1:25 into the game. On the
next SBVC possession, freshman quarter
back Roman Neville (Box Elder, UT) had
his pass intercepted by Bell at the
Ealges 40 yard line. After a
three-and-out series for the Eagles,
SBVC got down to the Eagles 42 yard line
where Neville went deep, only to be
picked off again by Bell at the Eagles 8
yard line.
As the Eagles attempted another scoring
drive, sophomore quarterback Courtney
Pete (San Diego Serra) threw an out pass
on fourth down, and was picked off by
Callis, who ran the ball 61 yards, down
to the Eagles 5 yard line. Moments later
a fumbled snap was recovered at the 1
yard line and another SBVC opportunity
went awry.
With 20 seconds left in the half, the
Eagles scored on a 34 yard touchdown
pass from Pete to freshman wide receiver
Tyrone Richardson (Hemet West Valley).
Ending the half with a 14-0 lead.
Whatever SBVC head football coach Kevin
Emerson and his staff told their student
athletes at half time was what they
needed to hear as SBVC outscored the
Eagles 28-3 in the second half.
The flood gates opened in the third on
back-to-back one yard collisions into
the end zone to tie up the game, 14-14.
Each score ran by freshman running back
Jesse Arrodondo (Bloomington). The
drive, which led to the score that tied
the game at 14 was started by an
interception from Marshall, who returned
the ball to the Eagles 21 yard line.
With 38 seconds left in the 3rd quarter,
sophomore kicker Zoltan Riazzo (Anza
Hamilton) connected on a 19 yard field
goal attempt, giving the Eagles the
lead, 17-14, going into the 4th quarter.
With 12:26 left in the game, Neville
tossed a 23 yard touchdown to sophomore
wide receiver Marcus Williams (San
Bernardino San Gorgonio) to take the
lead for good. With a 21-17 lead over
the Eagles, SBVC decided to attempt an
onside kick, and was successful, only to
have Bell intercept his third pass of
the night at the Eagles 4 yard line.
Moments later SBVC returned the favor as
sophomore defensive lineman Rutger
Metzger (Hesperia H.S.) and Thurston
combined on a sack of Eagles sophomore
quarterback Carmen Boyer (Temecula
Valley), causing Boyer to fumble the
ball on the Eagles 31 yard line. Eight
plays later, SBVC scored an insurance
touchdown with 2:17 left, on a 1 yard
run by Neville.
Football:
SBVC decimates Compton, 42-14
October
17, 2009
SBVC went into
the fourth quarter leading, 21-6, only
to tack on 21 more points, in a 42-14
wipeout of the Compton Tartars. The win
gives SBVC back-to-back Conference wins
for the first time since week 4 and 5 of
the 2007 season.
SBVC dominated the line, creating holes
for freshman running back Kristin James
(San Bernardino H.S.) to dart through 28
times for 163 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Freshman quarterback Roman Neville (Box
Elder, UT) went 15 for 21 with 2
touchdowns, as SBVC kept the ball on the
ground most of the game.
SBVC opened the scoring with 2:26 left
in the first quarter with a 13 yard
touchdown pass from Neville to sophomore
wide receiver Marcus Williams. Seven
minutes later, SBVC struck again, going
68 yards in 11 plays, concluding on a 7
yard touchdown run from James.
Compton took the opening kick off in the
second half and marched down the field,
going 65 yards in 15 plays, with
freshman running back Donald Malone
(Gardena H.S.) diving into the end zone
from 4 yards out.
Then the flood gates opened, SBVC
preceded to score 21 unanswered points.
With 5:39 left in the third quarter,
SBVC drove 64 yards in 5 plays, setting
up a 1 yard touchdown from James. In the
fourth quarter, Neville tossed a 15 yard
touchdown to freshman tight end Curtis
Cummings III (Perris H.S.), going 95
yards in 4 plays, which included a 66
yard run by sophomore running back
Ronnie Yarber (Moreno Valley).
With 11:59 left in the game, James
darted in from 29 yards out to put the
score at, 35-6; seven minutes later
Compton scored on a 48 yard touchdown
pass from freshman quarterback Shawn
McKnight (Los Angeles
Verbum Dei)
to freshman wide receiver Joseph
Williams (Los Angeles Fremont).
SBVC wrapped up the game as the game
clock ran out, when sophomore defensive
back Dexter Fowler (Victorville
Silverado) intercepted an errant Compton
pass and blasted 94 yards down the
sidelines for a touchdown.
SBVC had 10 penalties for 124 yards,
converted on all of their extra point
opportunities, and had few mistakes on
special teams.
Football:
The Streak Ends at 19!
October 3, 2009
SBVC defeated
San Diego Mesa (1-4, 1-1) at home,
14-10, ending a 19 game losing streak.
SBVC (1-4, 1-1) now goes into their bye
week with a victory and momentum.
The offense maintained a rhythm as they
were able to hold onto the ball for over
28 minutes, giving the defense the rest
needed to hold the Mesa Olympians late
in the game. The SBVC defense had two
huge stops deep in their own end, one of
which led to a missed field goal and a
turn over on downs with 1:15 left in the
game. The special teams limited their
mistakes to one punt return fumble and
SBVC only had 4 penalties for 40 yards.
Sophomore
linebacker Jim O'Brien (Lake Arrowhead
Rim of the World) had another stellar
night as he had 2 solo tackles and
assisted on 11, for a total of 13
tackles, including one forced fumble, on
tackle for a loss, a broken up play, and
a fumble recovery. Sophomore wide
receiver Marcus Williams (San Bernardino
San Gorgonio) had 6 receptions for 131
and a touchdown, including a reception
of 57 yards. Freshman punter Jimmy Ross
(Yucaipa) had 8 punts for 223 yards, a
long of 43 yards, and a punt within the
20 yard line.
The Olympians
opened up the scoring going 43 yards in
8 plays in 3:07 ending up with a 37 yard
field goal from freshman kicker Penn
McCall (La Jolla).
SBVC scored
with 14:54 left in the first half, going
63 yards in 8 plays in 2:52, when
freshman quarterback Roman Neville (Box
Elder, UT) connected with sophomore wide
receiver Marcus Williams (San Bernardino
San Gorgonio) for a 33 yard touchdown
pass.
After an SBVC
fumble by freshman punt returner Darell
Callis (Moreno Valley), put the
Olympians on the SBVC 10 yard line,
freshman quarterback Tynan Murray
(Poway) took the quarterback sneak in
for a touchdown, to give Mesa the lead,
10-7. Mesa finished the game with 165
yards rushing versus only 81 for SBVC.
Both teams finished with 163 passing
yards.
With 10:08
left in the game SBVC drove the field,
going 62 yards in 5 plays in 3:04,
finishing on a freshman running back
Kristin James (San Bernardino) 9 yard
touchdown run, giving SBVC the lead for
good, 14-10.
As time ticked
away, the SBVC defense stepped up. The
Olympians went 56 yards on 10 plays,
chewing up 7:22, and getting to the SBVC
5 yard line, and McCall missed a 21 yard
field goal attempt.
With the next
possession SBVC went three an out,
leaving freshman punter Jimmy Ross
(Yucaipa) to try and get them out of
their own end, but to no avail, as Ross
punted the ball 9 yards. Giving the
Olympians the ball at the SBVC 24 yard
line with 2:43 left in the game.
Once again the
SBVC defense stood tall, as Mesa went 29
yards in 6 plays ending up in a 4th and
goal situation where SBVC denied Mesa
for the last time. All thanks in large
part to SBVC sophomore linebacker
O'Brien having a handful of Mesa's
freshman quarterback Murry's jersey as
he pulled him to the ground.
Football:
Close second half not enough versus Victor Valley
September 26, 2009
SBVC was down
34-14 at the half and lost 41-29 at home
in the opener of American
Division-Mountain Conference play versus
Victor Valley.
The Victor Valley Rams took the opening
drive, 13 plays for 47 yards, ending
with a 28 yard field goal from freshman
kicker Philip Peralta (Barstow) and SBVC
responded with an 88 yard kick off
return for a touchdown by sophomore
returner Dexter Fowler (Victorville
Silverado).
The Rams took the next kickoff for a
touchdown, but the play was called back
on a penalty. With 7:40 left in the
first, the Rams scored on a 30 yard
touchdown pass from sophomore
quarterback Travis Hunter (Barstow) to
sophomore wide receiver Horace Carter
(Mojave).
The Rams opened up the second quarter
with a Peralta 43 yard field goal. A
Rams fumbled punt return led to a 24
yard touchdown reception by sophomore
wide receiver Marcus Williams (San
Bernardino San Gorgonio) from freshman
quarterback Robert Fuller (San
Bernardino Arroyo Valley) giving SBVC a
one point lead, 14-13.
Victor Valley would never relinquish
the lead again, as they took their next
possession, 62 yards on 5 plays,
finished by a 48 yard touchdown pass
from freshman quarterback Robert Love
(Pahokee, FL) to freshman wide receiver
Donald Fusilier (New Iberia, Louisiana
Westgate). Two and a half minutes later
Love connected with sophomore tight end
Pelton Smalls (Killeen, Texas Ellison)
for a 69 yard touchdown.
An SBVC fumbled kick off return led
to a 28 yard touchdown run by sophomore
running back Ryan Sampson (Slidell,
Louisiana Salmen) to finish off the
scoring for the first half.
The Rams' Love connected with
Fusilier for 5 yard touchdown, 6:31 into
the second half.
For SBVC, Fuller rushed to the one yard
line, fumbled into the end zone, the
ball was landed on by Williams in
the end zone for the score, making it
21-41.
For the next 18 minutes, each team
slugged it out, until SBVC's sophomore
defense back John Lewis (San Bernardino
San Gorgonio) broke the scoreless
drought by trapping Rams freshman
running back Troy Matautia (Waipahu,
Hawai'i) in the end zone for a safety.
With 1:47
left in the game freshman wide receiver
Cody Smith (Redlands) tossed a 39 yard
touchdown pass to freshman wide receiver
Cavin Newman (San Bernardino H.S.).
Some
positives for SBVC can be taken from
this game, this is the fourth straight
game where SBVC was able to convert on a
4th down a long with a fake punt on the
feet of freshman punter Jimmy Ross
(Yucaipa). The number of penalties
dropped substantially to 6 for 51 yards.
Sophomore linebacker Jim O'Brien had 1
solo tackle and assisted on 16 tackles,
giving him 17 total tackles on the
night. Williams had 6 receptions for 72
yards, including a 24 yard reception for
a touchdown. Williams also grabbed a
fumble in the end zone for a second
touchdown on the night. Freshman kicker
Jaime Garcia (San Bernardino H.S.) had 5
kick offs for 242 yards, averaging 48.4
yards per kick off and converted 3 of 4
extra point attempts.
Football:
One sided game versus Saddleback
September 19, 2009
SBVC were down
38-0 at the half and lost 52-0 at
Mission Viejo Saddleback.
Saddleback sophomore running back Jai
Morris (El Torro) took the Gauchos first
play 70 yards for a touchdown. Two and a
half minutes later sophomore quarterback
David Ingram (Irvine Woodbridge)
connected with sophomore wide receiver
Tre Villahermosa (Corona Centennial) for
a 39 yard touchdown. With 30 seconds
left in the first quarter Ingram tossed
a 4 yard pass to freshman wide receiver
T.J. Knowles (Henderson, NV Coronado),
to make the score 21-0.
With 13:58 remaining in the half,
sophomore running back Charles Neal
(Anaheim Esperanza) took the ball 3
yards for a touchdown. Five and a half
minutes later freshman kicker Michael
Frisina converted a 43 yard field goal
into three points. To wrap up the first
half, freshman quarterback Brad Curtis
(San Clemente) threw a 36 yard touchdown
pass to sophomore wide receiver Brad
Boles (Lake Arrowhead Rim of the World).
Saddleback opened up the second half
with a 6 play 69 yard drive that
finished with a 12 yard touchdown pass
from Curtis to sophomore wide receiver
Aziz Spellman-Smith (Mission Viejo). To
finish off the scoring, Curtis connected
with Bloes again on a 14 yard touchdown.
Some positives this week SBVC sophomore
linebacker Jim O'Brien (Lake Arrowhead
Rim of the World) had 12 total tackles;
sophomore defensive back Dexter Reed
(Savannah, GA Groves) had 11 total
tackles including 2 tackles for loss;
sophomore defensive lineman Rutger
Metzger (Hesperia) had 2.5 tackles for
loss totaling 29 yards, 2 sacks totaling
28 yards, along with 3 total tackles and
a quarterback hurry; and freshman linebacker Nate Schafer
(Springhill, FL Springstead) had 9 total
tackles. Freshman punter Jimmy Ross
(Yucaipa) had 6 punts for 190 yards,
with a long of 39 yards.
Next week SBVC returns home to open
American Division-Mountain Conference
play against the Victor Valley Rams.
Football: The Bell Game turns sour
September 12, 2009
SBVC played a
convincing first half of football, only
down by 4 points, then let the game slip
away, losing to RCC, 17-40.
RCC struck
first with a touchdown pass of 47 yards
on a flea flicker from sophomore running
back Cedrick Foster (Riverside J.W.
North) to sophomore wide receiver Tommy
Curry (Riverside J.W. North).
SBVC answered
3 minutes later with a 22 yard field
goal from freshman kicker Jaime Garcia
(San Bernardino).
RCC finished
the first quarter by adding another 7
points with a 3 yard quarterback sneak
by sophomore Nathan Lamonica (Murrieta
Valley).
SBVC opened
the second quarter with a 59 yard
touchdown pass from freshman quarterback
Robert Fuller (San Bernardino Arroyo
Valley) to sophomore wide receiver
Marcus Williams (San Bernardino San
Gorgonio).
RCC responded
seven minutes later with a 9 yard
touchdown pass from Lamonica to freshman
wide receiver Jordan Stip (Riverside
Poly).
SBVC finished
off the first half with 39 seconds left
with a 7 yard run from freshman wide
receiver Kristin James (San Bernardino).
Going into
halftime RCC leads 21-17, a last minute
RCC turn over on downs, gave SBVC the
ball seconds before halftime.
In the third
quarter RCC kicked a 30 yard field goal
to go up by 7 with over 9 minutes
remaining in the quarter. On the next
SBVC possession, Fuller threw a lateral
pass into the arms of sophomore
defensive lineman Cody Browne (Riverside
Martin Luther King, Jr.) who ran 60
yards untouched into the end zone.
From that
point on RCC maintained control, as SBVC
desperately tried to wrestle it back,
but to no avail.
In the fourth
quarter the mistakes continued, with
14:40 left in the game RCC punted to
SBVC’s freshman wide receiver Darrell
Callis (Moreno Valley), who fumbled the
ball at the SBVC 15 yard line, which was
eventually recovered in the end zone by
RCC for a touchdown. Putting the game
out of reach by the time RCC freshman
kicker Noah Dobson (Vista Murrieta)
converted a 30 yard field goal with 26
seconds remaining.
There were
some bright spots though, SBVC had less
penalties and less penalty yards this
week in comparison to last. Fuller
looked more comfortable as the starting
quarterback going 13 for 22 for 192
yards and a touchdown. In addition, RCC
had absolutely no answer for Marcus

Football:
SBVC tough loss in overtime
September 5, 2009
College of the Desert and San
Bernardino Valley College slugged it out on the field for 60
minutes, tired and warn out, they decided to take the game into
overtime, where College of the Desert won 13 to 6.
The
battle consisted of a crushing defensive
display and field goal attempts. Each
attempt brought a moment of pause to the
entire stadium, as each side held their
breath in anticipation of what was to
happen. Whenever a field goal attempt
was converted into points, that kick
barely missed the outstretched arms of
some defender and other times the kicks
were blocked altogether. Both teams were
2 of 4 on field goal attempts.
SBVC’s only points came off of the foot
of kicker Jaime Garcia (San Bernardino
H.S.) who converted kicks of 25 and 30
yards. Garcia’s effort led him to being
named the Mountain Conference Special
Teams/All-Purpose Player of the Week.
Opportunities were aplenty as SBVC got
into the end zone twice, but had the
attempts called back due to penalties.
SBVC committed 12 penalties for 180
yards and Desert had 12 penalties for 90
yards.
Mountain Conference Defensive Player of
the Week, Ben Pome’e (San Bernardino
Aquinas) had
3 tackles; 5 assisted
tackles; 8 total tackles; 3 tackles for
loss, totaling a loss of 8 yards; 1
broken up pass; 1 sack totaling a loss
of 5 yards.
Mountain Conference Offensive Player of
the Week nominee, Robert Fuller (San
Bernardino Arroyo Valley) completed
15 passes on 33 attempts for 155 yards;
rushing 7 times for 41 yards.
The next game for SBVC
will be at Riverside for the renewal of
“The Bell Game”. “The Bell Game” is a
historic Inland Empire rivalry that
dates back to the year SBVC opened, in
1926. From 1926 to 1980, SBVC and RCC
played each other for” The Bell”, during
World War II they played each other
twice in the same year. Since 1980, each
team has only met up 10 times, making
“The Bell Game” that much more
important.
