Football: SBVC wins again, comes from behind to beat Mt. San Jacinto
October 24, 2009

SBVC went into the locker room at half time down, 0-14. Then came roaring back to win the game 28-17, to move to 3-1 in Mountain Conference play.

This game was dominated by defense as the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles had sophomore defensive back Aubrey Bell (Temecula Chaparral) intercept 3 SBVC passes, while SBVC sophomore defensive lineman Kemaine Thurston (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) had two fumble recoveries, sophomore defensive back James Marshall (Moreno Valley) had an interception of 53 yards, and freshman defensive back Darrell Callis (Moreno Valley) had an interception of 61 yards.

Once again glaring mistakes on special teams and an unacceptable amount of penalties are what kept SBVC from making much headway until the second half of the game. SBVC had 13 penalties for 132 yards, while the Eagles had 12 penalties for 109 yards.

SBVC had their punt attempt blocked, and returned 24 yards into the end zone by freshman running back Brendan Young (Kauai, HI), 1:25 into the game. On the next SBVC possession, freshman quarter back Roman Neville (Box Elder, UT) had his pass intercepted by Bell at the Ealges 40 yard line. After a three-and-out series for the Eagles, SBVC got down to the Eagles 42 yard line where Neville went deep, only to be picked off again by Bell at the Eagles 8 yard line.

As the Eagles attempted another scoring drive, sophomore quarterback Courtney Pete (San Diego Serra) threw an out pass on fourth down, and was picked off by Callis, who ran the ball 61 yards, down to the Eagles 5 yard line. Moments later a fumbled snap was recovered at the 1 yard line and another SBVC opportunity went awry.

With 20 seconds left in the half, the Eagles scored on a 34 yard touchdown pass from Pete to freshman wide receiver Tyrone Richardson (Hemet West Valley). Ending the half with a 14-0 lead.

Whatever SBVC head football coach Kevin Emerson and his staff told their student athletes at half time was what they needed to hear as SBVC outscored the Eagles 28-3 in the second half.

The flood gates opened in the third on back-to-back one yard collisions into the end zone to tie up the game, 14-14. Each score ran by freshman running back Jesse Arrodondo (Bloomington). The drive, which led to the score that tied the game at 14 was started by an interception from Marshall, who returned the ball to the Eagles 21 yard line.

With 38 seconds left in the 3rd quarter, sophomore kicker Zoltan Riazzo (Anza Hamilton) connected on a 19 yard field goal attempt, giving the Eagles the lead, 17-14, going into the 4th quarter.

With 12:26 left in the game, Neville tossed a 23 yard touchdown to sophomore wide receiver Marcus Williams (San Bernardino San Gorgonio) to take the lead for good. With a 21-17 lead over the Eagles, SBVC decided to attempt an onside kick, and was successful, only to have Bell intercept his third pass of the night at the Eagles 4 yard line.

Moments later SBVC returned the favor as sophomore defensive lineman Rutger Metzger (Hesperia H.S.) and Thurston combined on a sack of Eagles sophomore quarterback Carmen Boyer (Temecula Valley), causing Boyer to fumble the ball on the Eagles 31 yard line. Eight plays later, SBVC scored an insurance touchdown with 2:17 left, on a 1 yard run by Neville.
