SBVC’s Lara named honorable mention to state Student Athlete of the Month

San Bernardino Valley College sophomore Jose Lara (Rim of the World) was named by the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) as an honorable mention for the Student Athlete of the Month for the month of November. Lara was also named an honorable mention for the SBVC Student Athlete of the Month award.

Head coach Wes Ashford gave his reasons why Lara deserved such an honor.  

      “Lara’s hard work and dedication to the sport, he has a great attitude and is a total team player. His overall finish at the Southern California Championship of 47th place is the highest for a 7th man. Lara was also a member of the unprecedented third straight state title in Men’s Cross Country for San Bernardino Valley College

On November 22nd, the San Bernardino Valley College men’s cross country team won their third straight state title, dominating the competition at Woodward Park in Fresno. Sophomore Carlos Perez (Barstow) was the top finisher for SBVC, smashing a school record he tied in 2007 (20:34) with a course finish time of 20:19.05 placing him third among all finishers. Those winning their second consecutive state title are sophomore runners Perez, Manuel Bueno (Rancho Cucamonga) (21st 20:59.26), Matthew Sartori (Redlands East Valley) (5th 20:23.85), Ronell El-Amin (San Bernardino H.S.) (35th 21:09.72), and Jared Bain (Rialto) (10th 20:36.58). New comers to the SBVC state championship team include: freshman runners Ankur Joshi (Indio) (25th 21:02.01) and Art Parra (Hesperia Sultana) (18th 20:56.06).

Sophomores Bain and El-Amin did not run at the 2007 state championship.

Individuals on the 2008 championship team greatly improved since 2007. Sartori finished the 2007 state championship in 32nd place with a time of 21:19, this year he finished 5th with a time of 20:23.85, a 27 spot improvement and a drop of almost 55 seconds off of his time. Bueno finished the 2007 state championship in 43rd place with a time of 21:29, this year he finished 21st with a time of 20:59.26, a 22 spot improvement and a drop of almost 30 seconds off of his time.


SBVC Men’s Cross Country looking to three-peat as State Champs

This weekend, San Bernardino Valley College is defending their title as two time state men’s cross country champions. Looking to bring home the third title in three years in men’s cross country for the Wolverines. State cross country runners are selected by region ending up in a Northern California versus Southern California showdown to be run at Woodward Park in Fresno. 

New comers to the Wolverines state team include: freshman Ankur Joshi from Indio and Art Parra from Hesperia Sultana.

Sophomore Carlos Perez from Barstow, in his second straight state championship, received high praise from men’s Coach Wes Ashford.  “He is our number one runner.”

Those returning to defend their title are sophomore runners Carlos Perez from Barstow, Manuel Bueno from Rancho Cucamonga, Matthew Sartori from Redlands East Valley, Ronell El-Amin from San Bernardino, Jose Lara from Rim of the World, and Jared Bain from Rialto.

The men finished off their 18th Foothill Conference Championship on October 29th at Barstow and a third straight Southern California title on November 7th at Bakersfield, in a lead up qualifier to the state championships.

“The toughest competition for us will be from any number of runners and teams, (Costa Mesa) Orange Coast, (San Diego) Mesa, (Walnut) Mt. San Antonio, Cerritos, Riverside, and (Sacramento) American River were really good this year,” said coach Ashford. And they are all competing for a share of the state title.

According to Coach Ashford, the highlight of the year was the Autumn Classic in Provo, Utah, where the Wolverines were competing against multiple schools across the country including several division one universities.

San Bernardino Valley College Men’s Cross Country sophomore Matt Sartori (Redlands East Valley) was named by the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) and the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) as an honorable mention for the Student Athlete of the Month for the month of October.  

Men’s Cross Country Head coach Wes Ashford gave his reasons why Sartori deserved such an honor.  

      “Matt has a good attitude and has great strides as an athletes and student. He has been consistently a team scorer (meaning top 5) all year and has been our first finisher on one occasion. He finished 4e finished 4th overall at the Orange County Invitational and 6th at the Foothill Invitational. At the Foothill Conference Championships he was our 4th man and placed 6th overall.” 

On November 7, Men’s Cross Country won their third straight Southern California title, and will attempt to complete an unprecedented “three-peat” at the state championships November 22, at Woodward Park in Fresno.


Cross Country returns to SoCal Regional's this Friday

Men's Cross Country is on the road to retaining their ranking as the top team in the state tomorrow at the Southern California Regional's at Kern County Soccer Park in Bakersfield. The SBVC Women's team will be sending seven women and an alternate to the Regional's and the Men's team will be sending seven men and an alternate.

The Men finished off their 18th Foothill Conference Championship last week at Barstow and are looking to continue a string of dominance in the sport of Cross Country by defending their third straight Southern California Championship in pursuit of their third straight state title. All the schools who are represented at the SoCal Regional's are competing for a share of the Southern California title and a spot in the state finals.

The Women will be sending sophomores Candice Galusha (Tehachapi), Jessica Carter (New Orleans Abramson), and Michelle Burley (Rialto Eisenhower) and freshmen Alejandra Alcantar (San Bernardino San Gorgonio), Tanisha Hunt (San Bernardino San Gorgonio), Reyna Montoya (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley), Nancy Mora (Bloomington), and alternate Irene Lebel.

The Men will be sending several members from the 2007 Men's Cross Country state championship team including sophomores Carlos Perez (Barstow), Manuel Bueno (Rancho Cucamonga), Matthew Sartori (Redlands East Valley), Ronell El-Amin (San Bernardino), Jose Lara (Rim of the World), Jared Bain (Rialto), and freshmen Ankur Joshi (Indio) and Art Parra (Hesperia Sultana).
