All-Foothill
Conference Team Announced
April 30,
2010
The 2010
season was filled with transitions as
the team was guided, for the first time,
by Nicole Di Salvio Hild. SBVC ended the
season with a record of 7-15 overall and
6-8 in Conference, finishing fifth.
On the field,
freshman standout, first baseman Jessica
Nelson (San Bernardino Cajon), was named
first team All-Foothill Conference. She
finished first on the team with a .400
batting average, a .683 slugging
percentage, and led the team in hits
(24), doubles (11), RBI’s (20), total
bases (41), and defensive put outs
(112).
Also named
first team All-Foothill Conference was
sophomore second baseman Alene Casillas
(San Bernardino Cajon). Casillas was
also the February SBVC Student Athlete
of the Month and was named an honorable
mention for the California Student
Athlete of the Month award in the same
month. She finished first on the team
with a .446 on base percentage, led the
team in walks (13), and started every
game she played in.
Named to the
second team All-Foothill Conference was
short stop Kathy Maldonado (San
Bernardino Arroyo Valley). She started
all 22 games this season finishing
second on the team with a .346 batting
average, and was perfect on the base
paths, going 6 for 6 in stolen bases.
Also named to
the second team All-Foothill Conference
was center fielder Lindsey Skidmore (San
Bernardino Cajon). Skidmore and Casillas
were the team captains this season and
it showed in the outfield. She also
started all 22 games this season leading
the team in at bats (67) and led the
team in stolen bases (14).
Softball: SBVC
ends season with early exit versus
Marauders
April 16,
2010
SBVC played about the best that they
could against one of the most dominate
teams in the state, losing to the
Lancaster Antelope Valley Marauders,
1-11 in 5 innings. SBVC got their lone
run of the game on the aggressive base
running tandem of sophomore's Lindsey
Skidmore and Alene Casillas. Since it
was the last home game for the team's
three sophomore's, Skidmore, Casillas,
and Vanessa Rubalcava each went to the
plate after the game to get their
ceremonial "last hit." A touching
tribute to the 14 SBVC players who
survived the 6 a.m. practices and
occasional painful injury.
The only run
scored for SBVC on the day was on a
single from Sophomore
center fielder Lindsey Skidmore (San
Bernardino Cajon)
scored sophomore
second baseman Alene Casillas (San
Bernardino Cajon). Other than
that, the Marauders offense was
dominate, but credit is owed to the SBVC
defense who only had 1 error on the day. The Marauders 2, 3, 4, and 5 hitters
went a combined 12 for 16 with 3 home
runs and 9 RBI's.
Softball: SBVC
unable to hold lead over Desert
April 9,
2010
SBVC clobbered the Palm Desert College
of the Desert Roadrunners (5-17, 4-8)
for 4 runs in the bottom of the third,
only to relinquish that lead over the
next three innings. SBVC lost, in a
close one, 4-6. Once again fielding
errors played a factor in the loss, as
SBVC had four, compared to the
Roadrunners 1 error.
SBVC got the scoring started in the
bottom of the fourth inning as freshman
third baseman Kathy Maldonado (San
Bernardino Arroyo Valley) singled to
center on one out, which was followed by
a double from freshman left fielder
Brittney Kanady (San Bernardino Cajon).
Lead off batter sophomore second baseman Alene Casillas
(San Bernardino Cajon) grounded out to
second base on a sacrifice, scoring
Maldonado from third, making the score
1-0.
Sophomore center fielder Lindsey
Skidmore (San Bernardino Cajon) then
singled to the pitcher, scoring Kanady,
SBVC leads, 2-0. Freshman
first baseman and SBVC leading hitter,
Jessica Nelson (San Bernardino Cajon)
clobbered a triple to left field,
scoring Skidmore, followed by a double
from freshman catcher Krystle
Lucero (Colton H.S.), which score
Nelson.
SBVC scored 4 runs in the inning,
unfortunately that would be all the runs
they would score on the day as the
Desert pitching staff stifled the SBVC
offense for the rest of the game.
Freshman right
handed starting pitcher Raelene Batres
(San Bernardino Cajon) went four and a
third innings, striking out 3, only
giving up 4 runs. Freshman right handed
pitcher Brittany Hanyon (Alta Loma H.S.)
came in with the bases loaded and one
out in the top of the fifth inning, she
quickly got batter sophomore center
fielder Kerbie Winn (29 Palms) to ground
into a fielders choice, getting the
runner at home. Which was followed by a
bases loaded walk bringing another run
in for Desert and then Hanyon struck out
the side to get out of the inning.
Hanyon went two and two thirds innings,
striking out 1, giving up 2 runs, which
was enough to get the loss, sending her
record on the year to 2-4.
Maldonado went 2 for 3 on the day,
scoring a run.
Although there is a bit of an
interesting twist to this game, on March
12, SBVC defeated Desert, 6-4, which is
the reverse of the score that Desert
beat SBVC by, 4-6.
Softball: SBVC loses a tough game to Rio
Hondo
March 31, 2010
SBVC played a rough game of softball
versus the Whittier Rio Hondo
Roadrunners, giving up 6 runs by the
bottom of the 6th, but SBVC (6-11 5-4)
roared back with a vengeance, scoring 5
runs to get within one, 5-6.
Unfortunately, close was not enough as
the Roadrunners (14-9 7-2) tacked on 2
more runs and SBVC fell, 5-8.
Sometimes, it
is difficult to mark where your
particular team is mentally during the
season, as a coach there are certain
times where players will get down on
themselves and other time where student
athletes will get way too confidant.
Sports allows for greatness to shine in
the most darkest of circumstances, when
the Roadrunners scored 5 runs in the top
of the second, SBVC could have given up,
but they didn't.
Freshman right
handed starting pitcher Raelene Batres
(San Bernardino Cajon) tried desperately
to get out of the second inning jam that
she was in, but after three runs scored
on a Rio Hondo home run, head coach
Nicole Di Salvio Hild decided to put in
freshman right handed pitcher Brittany
Hanyon (Alta Loma H.S.).
Two more runs
would cross home plate and two fielding
errors, gave the Roadrunners a 0-5 lead
going into the bottom of the second.
While SBVC had to kick start their
offensive production, Hanyon and the
SBVC defense played a near flawless
third and fourth inning, unfortunately
for SBVC, so did Rio Hondo. The
Roadrunners would score their sixth run
of the game on a solo home run in the
top of the fifth.
Approaching
the bottom of the sixth, down six runs,
many teams would have let their negative
self talk get the best of them, but not
at SBVC. Sophomore
second baseman
and SBVC Student Athlete of the
Month, Alene Casillas
(San Bernardino Cajon) started things
off with a single to right, after which
she stole second, and moved to third on
an error by the short stop. Sophomore
center fielder Lindsey Skidmore (San
Bernardino Cajon) then singled,
advancing to second on an error by the
third baseman, then advanced to third,
scoring Casillas.
Freshman
first baseman and SBVC leading hitter,
Jessica Nelson (San Bernardino Cajon)
clobbered a double to center field,
scoring Skidmore. Freshman catcher Krystle
Lucero (Colton H.S.) hit a double to
center scoring sophomore pinch runner
Paulina Hernandez (Colton H.S.), then
Hanyon blasted a triple to left scoring
Lucero. Four runs scored with no outs.
Sophomore
right fielder Courtney Delcid (Redlands
East Valley) reached base on an error by
the right fielder, scoring Hanyon, which
would be all the runs score for SBVC in
the bottom of the sixth. The Roadrunners
would add two insurance runs in the top
of the seventh to seal the win for Rio
Hondo
Softball: SBVC grounds the Eagles
March 24, 2010
SBVC Softball freshman right handed
pitcher Raelene
Batres (San Bernardino Cajon) pitched a
complete game, to pick up her fifth win
of the season, as SBVC (6-10, 5-3)
defeated the Mt. San Jacinto Eagles,
5-1. Sophomore short stop Vanessa
Rubalcava (San Gorgonio San Bernardino)
went 2 for 2, with 2 runs and an RBI and
freshman third baseman Kathy Maldonado
(San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) also went
2 for 2 in the win.
SBVC opened the bottom
of the first with an aggressive
offensive plan, when sophomore second
baseman Alene Casillas (San Bernardino
Cajon) was walked, she promptly stole
second base, then third. When freshman
left fielder Brittney Kanady (San
Bernardino Cajon) connected on an
infield single, Casillas scored, giving
SBVC a 1-0 lead.
The Eagles responded in
the top of the second, with a run, tying
the game at 1-1. SBVC then untied the
game in the bottom of the second, and
then scored some insurance runs in the
fourth and sixth innings.
Batres
allowed only one run,
which was unearned, and struck out five.
Freshman first baseman Jessica Nelson
(San Bernardino Cajon) continued to
prove why she is the team leader in
batting average going 2 for 3, one of
those two hits, was a double off of the
wall in the bottom of the third.
Softball: SBVC slams the Rams, moves to
4-2 in Conference
March 17, 2010
SBVC, plagued by 8 fielding error's, had
just enough offensive production to come
out on top of the Victorville Victor
Valley Rams, 6-5. Sophomore short
stop and SBVC Student Athlete of the
Month, Alene Casillas (San Bernardino
Cajon) went 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored,
including a triple and 2 stolen bases,
in the win.
SBVC (5-9 4-2) started out the game by
striking out the first two batters for
the Rams (12-13 3-3), then opened up the
bottom of the first by scoring two runs.
Freshman left fielder Brittney Kanaday
(San Bernardino Cajon) drove in
sophomore center fielder Lindsey
Skidmore (San Bernardino Cajon) and
freshman catcher Alexandria Salazar
(Redlands H.S.) hit a double to bring in
Casillas, to make the score, 2-0.
The Rams responded with three runs in
the top of the third on five SBVC
fielding errors, making the score, 3-2.
SBVC wasted no time recovering the lead,
as the top of the lineup produced again,
when Kanaday drove in Casillas and
freshman designated hitter Krystle
Lucero hit a ground ball sacrifice to
score Kanaday. Kanaday went 2 for 4 on
the day, with 2 RBI's.
SBVC would score a run in the bottom of
the fourth and the bottom of the fifth
to make the score, 6-3. The Rams
responded in the top of the sixth with a
flurry of hits scoring only 2 runs.
The winning pitcher for SBVC was
freshman Raelene Batres (4-5) (San
Bernardino Cajon) who threw 5 innings
giving up 5 runs, only 2 were earned, on
7 hits with 5 strike outs. Batres helped
her own cause multiple times as she went
2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Freshman pitcher Brittany Hanyon (Alta
Loma H.S.) threw 2 innings of
relief to get the save, striking out 2
and surrendering only one hit.
Softball: SBVC snake-bit versus the
Panthers
March 10, 2010
SBVC Softball (3-9 2-3) played tough and
aggressive, but in the end it was not
enough as they fell to the Rancho
Cucamonga Chaffey Panthers, 2-3. Chaffey
(8-15 3-1) went up 3-0 in the top of the
fourth inning and SBVC responded with
two runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Neither team could get a run across the
rest of the game.
SBVC could only muster up four hits on
the day, each hit given up proved to be
costly for Chaffey as SBVC stacked a
couple of hits together to score both
runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Unfortunately for SBVC, the one, three,
and nine hole hitters went a combined
0-10 with 4 strike outs.
In the bottom of the fourth, freshman
left fielder Brittney Kanady (San
Bernardino Cajon) had an infield single,
which was followed by a swinging strike
out, then freshman first base person
Jessica Nelson (San Bernardino Cajon)
singled to center field, advancing
Kanady to third. The next batter struck
out swinging, putting runners on the
corners with two outs. Desperate for a
run, sophomore designated hitter Vanessa
Rubalcava (San Bernardino San Gorgonio)
drives an infield single towards first
base, scoring the run and putting
runners at first and second with two
outs. Freshman third base person Crystal
Lucero (Colton H.S.) had a long double
to center field, driving in the run from
second and putting Rubalcava on third.
The next batter struck out swinging
ending the rally.
Freshman
pitcher Ralene Batres (San
Bernardino Cajon) pitched a complete
seven inning game, giving up only one
earned run and eight hits, while
collecting two strike outs.
Softball:
Casillas named Student Athlete of the
Month
March 5, 2010
Softball
sophomore short stop Alene Casillas (San
Bernardino Cajon) was named the
San Bernardino Valley College Student
Athlete of the Month for the month of
February.
Head
coach Nicole Di Salvio Hild gave her
reasons why Casillas deserved such an
honor.
“Alene
is one of the hardest working members of
the softball team. She demonstrates
leadership skills and was named team
captain in a unanimous vote by her
teammates. Alene is a positive force on
our team and always has a kind word for
those around her. Alene goes out of her
way to help others and is also a valued
member of the athletic training support
staff. Alene is also a leader on the
field she has taken over at short stop
and has already had a single, a double,
a triple, 3 walks, 2 sacrifice bunts, 2
stolen bases, and six RBI’s in her first
two conference games. Alene is a leader
in all aspects of the game and a
pleasure to coach.”
Softball: First Home Game
of the Season Brings Big Win Over
Barstow
February
26, 2010
Conference wins are always good, no
matter how sloppy or how lopsided the
victory was, a win gets your team that
much closer to a Conference championship
and a playoff berth. SBVC (3-4 2-0) used
a 12 run bottom of the second against
the Barstow Vikings (0-8 0-2) to cruise
to another Foothill Conference victory,
15-3.
The Vikings starting pitcher threw a
complete game and was tagged for 15
runs, 12 of which were earned, on 11
walks, the six defensive errors did not
help the Barstow cause either. But one
bright spot for the Vikings was that
after SBVC scored the 12 runs in the
bottom of the second, Barstow only
surrendered one hit the rest of the
game.
This was SBVC's largest offensive
production so far this season, the
largest run differential prior to this
game, that benefitted SBVC, was only 5
runs. Freshman first baseperson Jessica
Nelson (San Bernardino Cajon) was the
all around producer of the day as she
had a double and a triple, scored two
runs and had 3 RBI's.
Sophomore
short stop Alene Casillas (San
Bernardino Cajon) went 1 for 2 with a
triple, two walks, three runs scored,
snagged a stolen base, and two RBI's.
Sophomore center fielder Lindsey
Skidmore (San Bernardino Cajon) went 1
for 2 with two walks, two runs scored,
and two RBI's. Freshman left fielder
Brittney Kanady (San Bernardino Cajon)
went 1 for 1 with a walk, two runs
scored, and two RBI's. Sophomore right
fielder Courtney Delcid (Redlands East
Valley) went 1 for 1 with a walk, a run
scored, and two RBI's. Freshman third
baseperson Krystle Lucero (Colton H.S.)
went 1 for 2 with a walk, a run scored,
and an RBI. Freshman second baseperson
Kathy Maldonado (San Bernardino Arroyo
Valley) went 1 for 1 with a walk, two
runs scored, and one RBI.
