November 19, 2009

Under the tutelage of sixth-year coach Kristin Hauge, SBVC Women's Soccer ended the regular season undefeated and the team won a school record 17 games, on their way to winning their second straight Foothill Conference title. Continuing to build on its reputation as an up-and-coming program in the region, the 17 wins led to another first, a ranking of 6th in the state, and 3rd in Southern California. SBVC Women’s Soccer will face Bakersfield, at home, this Saturday, November 21 at 2 p.m. in the first round of the state playoffs. General admission is $8; faculty, staff, children under 12, adults 60 and older, and students with valid associated student cards are $6.

The first place conference finish led to the Wolverines third straight playoff appearance in the team’s history, giving SBVC its first visit to the playoffs in back-to-back-to-back years. In addition, the team was awarded a home playoff game for the first time in team history.

Women’s Soccer had 13 players named All-Foothill Conference, sophomore midfielder Sylvia Fuentes (Moreno Valley H.S.), freshman defender Angela Young (San Bernardino Cajon), freshman midfielder Lauren Evans (Redlands H.S.), and freshman forward Araceli Sanchez (Moreno Valley H.S.) were all named to First Team All-Foothill Conference. Miller), freshman forward Juana Padilla (San Bernardino H.S.), and sophomore midfielder Christine Meza (Rialto H.S.). Calderon was also the California Student Athlete of the Month award and was named the SBVC Student Athlete of the Month in the same month. In 2008, Magaña was named honorable mention All-Foothill Conference. One of the most prolific scorers in state history, Evelyn Calderon, finished the regular season with 20 goals and 11 assists equaling 51 total points.

Women's Soccer: The Perfect Season, 17-0-4, and Back-to-Back Conference Champs!
November 13, 2009

SBVC faced off against the eleventh ranked team in Southern California in the San Diego Mesa Olympians, and while the game was a stalemate throughout, a penalty kick decided the game, as SBVC won, 1-0.

The victory over the Olympians gives SBVC its first undefeated season in Women’s Soccer in team history. In addition, the sixth ranked SBVC Women’s Soccer team won its second straight Foothill Conference title another first for the team, who just last year won its first Conference title ever.

The deciding goal came in the second half as Mesa sophomore goal keeper Alysia Barone (La Jolla) was called for a foul in the penalty box after a rough recovery. Moments later sophomore midfielder Sylvia Fuentes (Moreno Valley H.S.) converted the penalty kick and that is all SBVC would need to secure the victory.

SBVC barraged the Mesa keeper with 18 shots on goal and SBVC sophomore goal keeper Maria Magana (San Bernardino Arroyo Valley) had 8 saves. In the 60th minute, Mesa turned up the heat keeping the ball on their end for most of the rest of the match, and the defense adopted the “bend, but do not break” philosophy as they absorbed every onslaught and turned away every attack.

The south seeding meeting, to determine playoff seedings for Men’s and Women’s Soccer, will be held on Tuesday, November 17th at Fullerton College at 11am.
